Oconee County is unique because of the contrast seen throughout the county. We have many of the big named retailers doing business within our borders and some of the best little downtown shops featuring the works of local artists. We have some newly constructed million dollar homes as well as some of the most beautiful homes that are almost 100 years old. We have elected officials who provide vision for future growth but have made the preservation of green space a part of our zoning regulations. Subdivisions and active farms coexist in this county. Our schools are considered some of the best in the state and our students credit the dedication of all our school employees for their success.

But what has always been the real strength of Oconee County is our citizens. They have created a great "community" because of their active involvement in our schools, churches, businesses, civic organizations, industries, and local government. Whether the need is to raise funds for a school playground, volunteer to coach for youth sports, give of their time and talent to a citizen's committee for our governing body, or support our local artists, our citizens define the word "hometown" by their daily involvement that guarantees our quality of life.
